Mayor of Copeland 2010 - 11

 

 

Councillor Mike McVeigh has been appointed to serve as new Mayor of Copeland for the year 2010 – 2011.

 

Mike was born in Egremont and still lives there with his wife Joyce, who will be his Mayoress.

 

A family man, Mike has two children and two grandchildren.

 

He worked at Millers Footwear manufacturers as a machine operator for 15 years until it closed, before becoming a safety rep in the Scaffolding section at Sellafield for 18 years.

 

Mike has also been Steward at Egremont Rugby Union Club for 4 years and at Egremont Rugby League Club for 12 years.

 

Mike has been a school governor at St Bridget’s RC Primary School in Egremont and a Councillor both at Egremont Town Council and Copeland Borough Council.

 

At Copeland, Mike was Chair of the Planning Panel for 3 years and is currently Chair of the Cumbria Planning Group. Mike also represents Copeland on Cumbria Play Fields.  

 

Mike’s hobbies are walking his dogs on the Fells, Swimming and following Youth Rugby Teams.

 

The Mayor’s chosen charities are The Huntingtons Disease Association and The Alzheimers Society.

 

The Deputy Mayor is Councillor John Jackson


What does the Mayor do?

The Mayor is the first citizen of the Borough of Copeland, and carries out civic ceremonial duties within the Borough and the wider community.

The Mayor is elected annually by the Council, the Constitution provides for the political group with a majority on the Council to nominate a Councillor to the Mayoralty for two consecutive years in three, and the main opposition group in the third year.
