Millom & Area Market Town Health Check & Action Plan

".. sustaining Millom as a distinctive, independent town that provides quality employment
for its residents and provides a wide range of valued services for local people and visitors
"

Millom

Millom is a small coastal town situated in the most southerly part of Copeland District. It is separated from the Furness peninsular by the Duddon Estuary and is bounded to the west by the Irish Sea. The coastal and the fell environments that surround the town have high landscape value located adjacent to the Lake District National Park and the Duddon Estuary, the latter having international recognition for its significance as a wildlife habitat.

Haverigg

Millom acts as the service centre for the villages of Haverigg, Bootle, The Green, The Hill, Waberthwaite and a scattered rural population.

The Action Plan area covers the wards of Millom Without, Bootle, Haverigg, Holborn Hill and Newtown.

It was with the discovery and exploitation of the iron ore deposits at Hodbarrow that the town grew and prospered.

In 1855 Millom had a population of over 10,000 and the town was devastated when the mine closed in 1968.

Millom's most famous son is poet and author Norman Nicholson (1914 - 87), who lived his whole life at St. George's Terrace in the town centre. A new stained glass window memorial has been placed in St. George's Church, where he worshipped.

The Millom & Haverigg Economic Development Group will be the lead organisation in the development and delivery of projects identified in the Action Plan, under the Market Towns Initiative banner, the Group will work in partnership to achieve the Vision for Millom and the surrounding rural hinterland. There is a population of 10,288 within the Action Plan area.

A Programme Manager was appointed in June to work with the Economic Development Group to drive forward the Action Plan for Millom and the surrounding area.
