What is Broadband?
Broadband is a new technology which can help transform the way we live, learn, work and communicate. It is an "always on" connection to the internet which is at least 10 times faster than your PC dial up modem, which enhances opportunities for new services to be delivered to both residential and business consumers.
Broadband is delivered over a standard BT telephone line you wont have to waste time or money getting a new line installed. In most cases, your telephone number will remain unchanged and depending on what package you choose, and youll either be able to install everything yourself or have an engineer come to help you.
All you need is a computer that meets the minimum requirements, plus a broadband modem and microfilters (phone adapters).
What can it provide?
Examples of the type of services that can be provided are: -
For home users:
Broadbands high-speed connection lets you access websites, download music,
play games, watch movies all much faster than before. As it uses a separate
line, so you (or someone else) will be able to talk on the phone at the same
time as being online.
For business users:
Broadband enables you to communicate more effectively with your customers, your
partners and your suppliers. You will spend less time downloading files and
e-mails, therefore you can turn work around with much greater speed. There are
a range of packages available geared towards the business user, meaning you
can get the support and services appropriate to the needs of your business
How can I get it?
There needed to be evidence of required demand for Broadband from residential and business users in the area to enable the local exchange upgrade that allows Broadband to come to Millom.
This is where YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE.. it required a register of interest for this new service to be made available, and a requirement to reach a trigger level of 500 BT had set for this area.
This has gone so well that we now have reached this target and have been informed of the Ready For Service (RFS) date, which will be the 24th May 2004.
British Telecom
British Telecom (BT) has undertaken a campaign to promote broadband and upgrade their telephone exchanges once demand has been identified.
Millom Reaches Its Target!!
Millom has reached the target set by BT to have Broadband enabled in the town. In July 2003 BT gave Millom a target of 500 registrations of interest to prove demand for Broadband, the 23rd January 2004 saw Millom hit the target.
Vikki Turner, Millom & Area Market Town Programme Manager said of the Broadband Campaign success:
"This is excellent news. Millom reaching the target set by BT really has been a team effort with schools, businesses, organisations and individuals all promoting the campaign and encouraging registrations."
The next stage of the Campaign to bring Broadband to Millom is to receive a Ready For Service (RFS) date.
That wait is now over as 24th MAY 2004 has been announced as Millom's 'Ready for Service' date.
The Ready For Service date is the date that the Millom exchange will be enabled to provide Broadband.
If you would like to register for Broadband once it is available you can register with your chosen Internet Service Provider, a list of providers can be found at:
