NACRO FOOTBALL PROJECT - [link back to main Projects page]
A project encouraging 10 to 18 year olds, on some West Cumbrian estates, to play football is proving to be a huge success.
'At risk' youngsters aged 10 to 18 living in South Whitehaven; Hensingham; Salterbeck; St Michael's; and Northside are already forming teams and taking part in competitive matches.
The initiative is being led by programme manager, Tony Ferguson, in partnership with West Cumberland FA and is one of a number of similar schemes being run nationally through NACRO, the leading independent national crime reduction charity, in England.
The project encourages participants to get involved in regular, organised activity, to increase self-esteem; aid personal and social development; reduce offending and anti-social behaviour; improve relationships with adults; and improve school attendance for those taking part in the project.
