 A Race to the line

Each of the three Boroughs covered by Sport Action Zone were identified as being in the top third of districts nationally in terms of multiple deprivation.

These figures, taken from Index of Local Deprivation 2000, were based on: income; employment; health deprivation and disability; education skills and training; housing; and geographical access to services.

Out of 354 Allerdale rated 98th; Barrow 24th; and Copeland 72nd (where 1 is most deprived)

The needs in Allerdale include tackling: multiple deprivation, 10 of its wards featured in the top 20% of the country suffering from deprivation; and rural issues, to be tackled through mobile service delivery and the use of community halls and school fields.

SAZ has recognised a need to increase the variety of youth opportunity in Allerdale, using its surrounding natural resources, such as the National Park and coastline. Education issues will be addressed through developing opportunities for volunteers to train as youth sport coaches and Work Based Learning for Adults; and promoting health improvements through sport and physical activity as well as increasing the active partnership links between health and sport, in particular relating to Coronary Heart Disease and obesity.

Eight of Barrow's wards featured in the top 20% of the country suffering from multiple deprivation. The findings also highlighted the need for opportunities for employment and voluntary involvement through sport, by the development, coordination and enhancement of the range of school holiday sporting activities with partner organisations.

As in the other Boroughs, a need for variety of youth opportunities was identified. Targets in Barrow will look at developing fitness programmes for young people excluded from mainstream education and extracurricular non-competitive opportunities, especially for girls.

One aim in particular is to develop links between physical activities with the behaviour curriculum in young people to improve self-esteem, confidence and social skills for behaviourally challenged children. There is also a need to develop communication channels and further opportunities with young people, disabled, older adults women and girls.

It is hoped that the long term effects of many of the schemes will work as preventative measures against Coronary Heart Disease, depression, obesity and address community safety agendas and sporting provision.

Education issues will also be addressed through the development of opportunities for volunteers to train as youth sport coaches and work-based Learning for Adults.

Multiple deprivation is also an issue facing Copeland, which has 13 of its wards in the top 20%. It also has similar needs of addressing rural and educational issues as its neighbouring Boroughs

Youth opportunity issues, also being tackled using natural resources; will also concentrate on physical activity opportunities for those aged 11 to 25, especially in South Whitehaven.
Community safety issues will be examined, concentrating on areas with the highest crime rates and where police receive concerns about groups of young people in public places.

Integrated community development, especially in South Whitehaven, Egremont, Cleator Moor and Millom will remain a focus.
