Archive & Reference Library
Stocked with books, newspapers, cuttings and multimedia recordings, the Beacon Museum library is a fascinating resource for local history. Access to the library is free for personal research.

Photographic Orders
The Beacon holds a collection of over 5000 photographs and negatives from Whitehaven and Copeland. Reproductions of pictures can be ordered.
Object Identification
The Museum Curator is available to identify any mystery objects you may have. Simply leave the object at reception, obtain a receipt and you will be contacted within two weeks.
This is a free service. Please note that we cannot give valuations.
Research Services
Is there something about your local history you are curious about? Just give us a ring, e-mail or write and we will try to assist you.
There is no charge for basic enquiries. Charges apply for more extensive research requirements.
Handling Collections & Loan Boxes
The Museum can provide a number of themed handling collection boxes. These are available to hire on a weekly basis and are popular with young and old, both in and out of formal education.

Behind The Scenes Tours
What you see in the Museum is only the tip of the iceberg.
It is not possible to display the Museum Collection in full in the Beacon and we have a dedicated off-site storage facility to house the Reserve Collections.
The Resource Centre houses the Museum’s Reserve Collection. If you have a special interest, or would like to see behind the scenes, you can arrange a private tour.
Special tours can be arranged for a group of up to 15 people by appointment.
