School Services

The Beacon is undergoing a total refurbishment and the main museum floors will be closed until 5th October 2007.

Services to schools are continuing as normal, with all activity sessions being offered as outreach sessions in your schools rather than being at The Beacon. To request an education pack detailing School Services, please contact The Beacon.

Activity Sessions - Schools

Wash Day BluesThe Beacon offers a full series of Educational Resources under the separate brand of Learning Links.

Key stage linked Activity Sessions can be arranged for delivery either at your school or in The Beacon. £25 + VAT (travel charged for visits outside Copeland).

Loan box - Victorian ToysLoan boxes

Full of real and replica objects together with teachers notes on interpretation and classroom use.

Loan Boxes can be borrowed on a weekly basis £10 + VAT per week.

Teachers to collect and return the boxes to the Beacon.

Document Loan Packs

Bumper packs of copies of original documents to bring teaching alive in the class room. Presented in easy clean folders in bumper A3 size. £5 + VAT per week. Teachers to collect and return the boxes to the Beacon.

Video Conferencing - World War II Home FrontVideo Conferencing

In partnership with CLEO (Cumbria Lancashire Education Online),

The Beacon is proud to be able to provide special video conferencing sessions by costumed characters on the following subjects:

  • World War II Home Front (KS2 or KS3)
    The year is 1942 and the air raid siren is sounding. Meet Averil in her Anderson air raid shelter to discover what she’s rescued in her bag of life’s essentials.
  • Victorians (KS2)
    Meet Hannah, housekeeper for Lord Lowther. Find out about her work, her family and the influence of coal mining on the community.
